Gretchen Albrecht was born in Auckland in 1943 and graduated from the Auckland School of Fine Arts with honours in 1964. She travelled extensively and worked in the USA and Europe before returning to New Zealand in the 80's.
Through experimentation in the 1970's she looked at different methods of applying paint to canvas and the alternatives to the traditional brush application. This led to her abstract "stained" canvasses, which took on segmented semi-circle shapes in the early 80's which the artist refers to as "hemispheres". In the early 90's she arrived at the oval shape in which she now incorporates rectangular forms.
She was created Companion of the Order of New Zealand for services to art in 2000.
