Stephen Bambury was born in 1951 in Chirstchurch and graduated from Auckland University with a Diploma of Fine Arts. He was the inaugural recipient of the Moet et Chandon Fellowship which took him to France where he lived and worked for three years.
He is a pure abstract painter who has never deviated from this style. He uses a wide range of materials including aluminium, brass and steel together with industrial and chemical processes to create different effects, however still uses quite traditional processes such as gilding and acrylic paint.
He uses repetition of forms to create his well known crosses and only presents work in groups of two or seven.
