Dick Frizzell was born in Auckland in 1943. He worked for eight years as a commercial artist after graduating and travelled and studied art extensively overseas.
Even though some of his work at first glance appears naïve, amateur painting, he is actually one of New Zealand's more competent figurative artists. He has mastered almost every style including cubist, abstract, realist, expressionist pop and postmodernism with his subject matter equally as varied ranging from can labels to landscapes.
