Karl Maughan graduated from Elam at Auckland University with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1987. He was dividing his time between Auckland and London with his wife Emily Perkins the well known author before moving permanently back to New Zealand. He now works and resides in New Zealand
His signature painted gardens and rhododendron bushes are painted in oil and are often on a very large scale. The hyper-real gardens have simplified details with exaggerated colours. He has spent years sourcing an archive of photographic reference material.
His work is represented in many institutional and private collections both in New Zealand and internationally.
