Elizabeth Rees was born in Palmerston North in 1959. She completed a Diploma in Fine Arts at Queen Elizabeth College in 1976 and a Diploma in Fine Arts, Painting at the University of Canterbury in 1977 and has been exhibiting regularly since 1981.
Elizabeth works on carefully primed canvas using oil paint. Her earlier work resembled formal portraiture with blurred and quirky touches. She also produced carefully detailed images of people and animals carefully against dramatic backdrops.
Her recent work depicts landscapes both real and imagined. Light is a major component of her work and she uses the luminous qualities of oil paint to create this effect.
