Francesca Mollett was born in Bristol in 1991 and graduated with a MA from the Royal College of Art , London in 2020.
Using abstraction as a tool to investigate surface, Mollett’s paintings are deeply textured and process focused. Primarily working with oil paint, acrylic and charcoal, Mollett works on calico canvas to create a multitude of layers in her compositions. She makes abstract paintings that are reflections of light and surface through a fluid but precise process. Images and contours of plants and insects dissolve to the point where they are difficult to classify or recognise.
Her images evolve by taking observations from an image and this transforms into a process of analysing the shifting passages of paint as it is applied and dries. Tension between solidity and luminosity develops and the image becomes a reflection of reactions of light on the surface.
