Gordon Walters

Gordon Walters was born in Wellington in 1919. He received some art training at Wellington Technical College but more informal lessons from the Dutch Indonesian artist Theo Schoon were more influential on his work. His lifelong interest in Maori and Polynesian indigenous art has most greatly influenced his art.

He worked in isolation for almost a decade before he showed his first Koru paintings in Auckland in 1965. His immaculate technique is best described as geometric abstraction and has resulted in paintings that look printed.

Walters is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most senior artists and his style of abstraction has influenced and encouraged many younger artists.

Gordon Walters died in 1995.
