Ildiko Kovacs

Ildiko Kovacs was born in 1962 in Australia and is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary abstract artists.

She began painting in the 1980’s in a style influenced by the abstract impressionists. In the early 1990’s she took a trip to Broome and the Kimberley region. She suddenly realised what she had in her own backyard and immersed herself in the landscape and rock art.

She uses a wandering line over smudged, blurred and muted colour and her preferred tool for painting is the roller. She uses a lighter sponge on the roller to create an effect of the paint “hovering” over other lines and the background.

Her artworks feature in many collections including National Gallery of Australia, MCA, Art Gallery of NSW and many private collections.
