Imi Knoebel is one of Germany’s most important contemporary artists. He was born in Dessau in 1940 and was a student of Joseph Beuys at the Dusseldorf Art Academy.
He has been a key figure in abstract art for at least 30 years and in 2000 was accorded a retrospective at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum.
He is best known for his minimalist abstract painting, sculpture and pared down forms. He uses colour, brushstrokes and contrasting panels in his most widely recognised works. His unique and impeccable style has been defined by the recurring “knife cuts” style that produce abstract and expressive shapes
In 2011 he was commissioned to make six stained glass windows for the apse of the Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral.
Imi Knoebel’s work is held in many international public art institutions including MoMA New York, DIA Foundation and numerous private collections.
