Jonny Niesche was born in Sydney, Australia in 1972. He graduated from Sydney University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (1st class Hons) and a Master of Visual Arts in 2013.
He creates vibrantly coloured abstractions that sit somewhere between painting and sculpture. The pigment on the voile fabric he uses is applied in a band of colour with indistinct edges so that one tone blurs into the next creating an almost optical illusion.
He says of his work “I use transparent fabrics that appear very, very saturated from the side, but dissipate as you move to the front. I use mirrors behind the fabrics and to the sides of paintings, so that when the light changes in a room, or the sun comes across the painting, it will cast light and shadows that change over the course of the day.”
Jonny Niesche lives and works in Sydney and has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the USA. His work is held by many Australian institutions.
