Matt Arbuckle

Matt Arbuckle was born in New Zealand in 1987. Until recently he lived in  Melbourne and now resides in Auckland . He graduated from Unitec Institute of Technology Auckland, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Art) in 2009.

He uses a process similar to a traditional Japanese dying technique called shibori to create abstract images. This process involves wringing, squeezing and pressing fabric and twisting and folding it to dry. Through this process he creates abstract landscapes and grids.

His work is held in public and private collections including the Chartwell Collection, Auckland Art Gallery and the James Wallace Trust Collection.  In 2017 he was the recipient of the James Wallace Art fellowship to Vermont Studio Centre, USA.
