Max Gimblett was born in 1935 and is one of New Zealand’s most internationally prominent and successful living artists. He has been based in New York since the early 1970s and continues to exhibit regularly in the US and throughout New Zealand.
His shaped canvases convey various associations and meanings connected to the oval, rectangle, tondo, keystone, and the quatrefoil, for which Gimblett is most recognised.
In 2015 he created 7000 brass quatrefoils to hang on the exterior of St David’s soldiers’ memorial church in Auckland. The artworks were called “The Art of Remembrance”. For three months they adorned the church and were a glimmering message of peace and remembrance for all New Zealanders who served in World War 1.
He is well represented in major collections around the world.
