Seraphine Pick was born in Kawakawa in 1964. She graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1988 and gained a Diploma of Teaching from Christchurch College of Education in 1991.She received the Olivia Spencer Bower Award in 1994 and the Rita Angus Fellowship in 1995.
Her early expressive paintings often portrayed mythological subjects but also included images relating to personal experiences and memories of her childhood. Her inspiration was also found amongst the pages of pop culture magazines
After her later experiences travelling through Europe, her exposure to the immense history of European art and the advent of Google with its endless images, she found the raw material for new works. Her work has been described as auto biographical however she states that her work is constantly changing and that she sees endless possibilities ahead.
