Stephen Bambury

Stephen Bambury was born in 1951 in Christchurch and graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland with a Diploma of Fine Arts. He was the inaugural recipient of the Moet et Chandon Fellowship which took him to France where he lived and worked for three months.

He is a pure abstract painter who has never deviated from this style. He uses a wide range of material including aluminium, brass and steel together with industrial and chemical processes such as gilding, chemical patinas and rust.
His works are notable for their sense of control and precision and he uses repetition of forms to create iconic shapes: the square, the circle and in particular the cross.

His work is held in many major collections including Te Papa, the Auckland Art Gallery and the Christchurch Art Gallery.
